“The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.” - Proverbs 15:2

In speaking with the subject of gifts in the church at Corinth, Paul discusses tongues, not as a blessing, but as a problem. This is the truth he presents in I Cor.14. There are many today who desire the experience which the church at Corinth had. They even think that the tongues experience will help them to be spiritual. Some even falsely teach that it is part of the salvation experience. The fact is, however, the church at Corinth was the most carnal of the churches in the New Testament days. Therefore, tongues are not a mark of spirituality but rather of carnality.

There were two gifts that were prominent among the Corinthian believers: prophecy and tongues. In comparing the two Paul said it was better to prophesy than to desire to speak in tongues. Prophesying was a blessing to the church. I Cor.14:3 states that prophesying brought edification, exhortation, and comfort. The one having the gift of prophecy could be understood by the people, but the one that supposedly had the gift of tongues could only be understood by God. It is apparent that tongues in the church at Corinth had degenerated into a gibberish that the people could not understand (see vss.3,9,11,16).

Paul spoke in known foreign languages, but he did not use those when preaching in Corinth (or any other of the churches he founded). He used Greek or Hebrew so that his hearers could understand. He wanted them to receive the message - it was necessary that they hear in a language that they knew.

Paul said that the important thing was that people understand what is said. Vs.19 states that it is better to speak 5 words in a language understood than 10,000 words not understood. Scripture teaches that what we use in all our services must be used not only to bless those who hear, but with words they can understand as well.
